People with Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) and those who care for them urgently need evidence-based help that can be used in the real world. How can NIA best support the development of more effective, dementia-friendly care and services for people living with the disease? How can we better support families and other caregivers undertaking the difficult demands of daily care, changing roles and decision making?
Our National Research Summit on Care, Services, and Supports for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers, coming up March 24–25, 2020, will provide the ideal setting to tackle these questions and more. This time around, we have some new ways to include diverse perspectives and we need your input to make the summit a success!
Calling all potential poster presenters
In addition to plenary talks, research presentations and discussion panels, the summit will feature a new opportunity for investigators working on innovative dementia care, services or support research to submit a scientific poster presentation abstract. All are welcome, but we are especially interested in submissions from students, postdoctoral scientists, junior faculty and other early-stage investigators.
Now is your chance to be an active part of the summit: Submit a scientific or informational poster presentation abstract for consideration! Abstracts will be accepted through November 15, 2019. Please share this opportunity widely with your colleagues and students.
Incorporating your insights
This kind of summit truly takes a village — collaboration is the only way to make it happen. Dr. Jennifer Wolff of the Johns Hopkins University and Dr. David Reuben of the University of California, Los Angeles, are co-chairing the Summit Steering Committee, which is comprised of a range of other academic researchers as well as stakeholders, including a person living with dementia and a caregiving partner.
NIA was thrilled to receive more than 100 submissions in response to our Request for Information published earlier this year, and we are reviewing this input throughout the summit planning process. Thank you to all who contributed ideas!
Research recommendations from the first summit on dementia care, caregiving and services in 2017 have already informed many efforts, including NIA’s AD+ADRD Research Implementation Milestones. We look forward to again taking stock of our progress and identifying future research priorities to help inform the efforts of federal agencies, foundations and other research funders.
